United Way of the Mark Twain Area, Hannibal Missouri

Realizing that human service programs outside the Hannibal city limits were struggling to make ends meet, the United Way rewrote by-laws and became the United Way of the Mark Twain Area. With a concentrated effort to expand the campaign to all areas in which funded programs are seated, the United Way now covers the five counties of Marion, Ralls, Monroe, Lewis and Shelby. We currently help fund over 30 programs for youth, seniors, people with disabilities, emergencies and health & education. In addition to the annual drive, which is well supported by business, industry and individuals, the United Way initiates and collaborates to build capacity within the communities of Northeast Missouri. In the past, our efforts like the Unmet Needs committees have brought needed recovery assistance following floods, tornadoes and natural disasters. With the deployment of the local National Guard troop in 2003, the United Way stepped forward offering services to families left behind and began a program sending hometown newspapers to all overseas military personnel from Northeast Missouri. This program will continue until the last service man and woman return home.As you can see, the United Way of the Mark Twain Area is much more that an annual fund raising event. We are a viable and credible organization actively working in each community in Northeast Missouri to make this the very best place to live and rear a family.
